Your Absence is Hurting Our Community
To: Rep. Carey, Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted
From: A constituent in Columbus, OH
March 24
I am writing to express my disappointment that you did not attend the Indivisible Central Ohio Town Hall yesterday, where over 1,200 constituents gathered to share their stories and ask important questions about the future of Ohio. During this event, two stories stood out to me and deeply illustrated the urgent need for your attention to the issues that directly impact our community. One constituent, a woman who, along with her husband, runs a nonprofit that grows produce and donates it to food banks, shared how vital USDA grants are to their operation. These grants not only help them expand their donations but also employ seven people, all while reducing food waste and providing much-needed food to hungry families. Other farmers also depend on this funding to ensure that excess produce reaches those in need. Another constituent, whose organization conducts research on preventing injuries and deaths from drug overdose, child abuse, and firearms, highlighted the critical importance of preserving NIH funding. Cuts to medical research grants are jeopardizing vital work like hers—work that is essential not only for her organization but also for broader efforts in cancer, Alzheimer’s, and other critical research areas. The cancellation of these grants, often after applications are submitted, is wasting years of research and leaving institutions like OSU and Nationwide to suffer. It was especially disheartening to see that while engaged public servants like Senator Beth Liston and former House Representative Adam Miller were present and actively addressing these concerns, you were absent. Their presence underscored the difference it makes when elected officials are willing to listen directly to the voices of their constituents. How can you effectively represent Ohioans and advocate for our needs if you are not present to hear firsthand the stories of those most affected? I urge you to make it a priority to attend events like these in the future, where our community can share its experiences and concerns openly. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response.
