An Open Letter
To: Rep. Scholten
From: A constituent in Grand Rapids, MI
March 11
I am deeply disappointed that you voted to approve the recent budget. We cannot act like the President's actions are normal. You cannot ignore the President’s recent blatant power grab over federal spending. By supporting a budget, you are missing the chance to secure your own constitutional authority to allocate and spend money. You have become a pawn in undermining the separation of powers.
The executive branch does not have the right to unilaterally control federal funding—that power belongs to Congress. You should not approve anything that doesn't reinforce this fact. By approving this budget, you have weakened your own authority and set a dangerous precedent for unchecked executive overreach. I expected you to stand up for the integrity of the legislative branch, not enable its erosion.
I urge you to reconsider your stance and take action to restore Congress’s rightful role in the appropriations process. That should be your number one priority before you legitimize a faux democracy. Your constituents are watching.
