Oppose the Restriction of Smithsonian Funds and Programs

To: Sen. Risch, Sen. Crapo, Rep. Fulcher

From: A constituent in Nampa, ID

March 28

I am writing to express my strong opposition to President Trump’s recent executive order targeting Smithsonian Institution funding. This move threatens historical accuracy, cultural representation, and the mission of the Smithsonian as a leading educational institution. The Smithsonian exists to preserve and share the full scope of American history, including the contributions of diverse communities. The order’s vague language about “improper ideology” and restrictions on funding for programs that supposedly “divide Americans” dangerously opens the door to censorship. Erasing or distorting history does a disservice to future generations and undermines the very foundation of historical inquiry. Additionally, efforts to control how the Women’s History Museum represents gender identity and to reassess public monuments based on a politically motivated framework are deeply concerning. Historical interpretation should be guided by scholarly research, not partisan agendas. I urge you to oppose any attempts to defund or restrict Smithsonian programs based on ideological grounds. The integrity of our nation's historical institutions must be protected from political interference. Please take action to ensure the Smithsonian remains an independent and inclusive resource for all Americans.
