PhD student Rumeysa Ozturk, from Tufts University, has been illegally detained by self-described police agents in Massachusetts on Tuesday. Ozturk’s whereabouts are currently unknown and she has not been allowed to contact her family, friends, or lawyers. Ozturk is legally here in the USA on a student visa.
I am horrified and disgusted by this blatant disregard for the law. Allowing this event to go unpunished sets a terrible precedent for other legal immigrants and United States citizens. Ozturk MUST be allowed to go through the legal processes that she rightfully deserves. Not only is this event an attack on civil rights, it is also an embarrassment to the United States, our country which is quickly on its way to losing its “land of the free” name.
I demand that Ozturk’s whereabouts be revealed and that she be allowed to communicate with legal counsel. Whatever agency is detaining her must be thoroughly investigated.
