Prioritize upholding LGBTQ+ rights and human dignity

To: Rep. Castro, Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in San Antonio, TX

March 9

It is crucial that we uphold and protect the rights and dignity of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender individuals who are facing concerted efforts to undermine their civil liberties across the country. Recent legislative actions seek to restrict healthcare access for trans youth, ban trans athletes from competing based on their gender identity, and censor classroom discussions around gender identity and sexual orientation. These measures threaten the wellbeing and mental health of an already vulnerable population. Public health is predicated on safeguarding the fundamental rights and human dignity of all people. Discrimination, marginalization, and denial of basic civil rights directly undermine the health of affected communities. We cannot achieve broader public health goals while allowing the disenfranchisement of the LGBTQ+ population to persist. Their health and rights are inextricably linked. As such, I urge you to vigorously oppose any legislation or policy that discriminates against LGBTQ+ individuals, especially transgender people. We must create an environment of affirmation, respect, and equal protection under the law for all people, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. Doing so is not only a matter of human rights, but a vital public health imperative to support the wellbeing of vulnerable communities. Upholding LGBTQ+ rights is central to our mission of building a healthier, more equitable society for all.
