An Open Letter
To: Sen. Padilla, Rep. Sherman, Sen. Schiff
From: A constituent in Sherman Oaks, CA
March 18
I am writing to express my deep concern about recent efforts to eliminate critical environmental protection regulations and staff at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The potential dismantling of key offices, such as the Office of Research and Development, poses a direct threat to the health of our communities and our environment. The EPA’s science office plays a vital role in ensuring that environmental policies are based on the best available science. This office has been instrumental in conducting research that supports regulations to protect clean air, water, and land. Its work helps us understand and address the risks posed by harmful chemicals, pollution, and climate change. Shutting down this office would undermine the EPA’s ability to fulfill its legal obligation to protect human health and the environment. Representative Zoe Lofgren rightly pointed out that the Office of Research and Development was created by congressional statute, and its dissolution would be illegal. The idea of weakening or eliminating this essential office is deeply troubling. It would not only endanger public health but also undercut the independence of scientific research at the EPA, creating a vacuum that could allow industries to influence environmental policies for their own benefit. The loss of EPA jobs, particularly in scientific and technical roles, would have significant repercussions for communities across the country, including states like North Carolina and Oklahoma. As a concerned constituent, I urge you to oppose any efforts to dismantle the EPA’s scientific research offices and eliminate jobs that protect our environment and public health. The science and research conducted by the EPA are essential to ensuring that future generations inherit a safe and healthy environment. Rather than cutting these vital resources, our government should be strengthening the EPA and supporting its mission to safeguard the air, water, and land for all Americans. Please stand up for science and environmental protection by opposing any efforts to weaken the EPA and its critical work. I hope I can count on you to protect the public health and environmental regulations that we all depend on. Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter. I look forward to hearing from you on this issue.
