The proposed repeal of the estate tax would be a massive giveaway to the nation's wealthiest dynasties and should be opposed. The estate tax is one of the most progressive sources of federal revenue, paid almost entirely by the richest 1 out of every 1,000 estates. By 2025, couples with less than $7 million in wealth will be exempt, showing the tax only impacts the extremely wealthy. Repealing it would create loopholes allowing the rich to shelter income and drastically reduce tax revenue needed for important programs. The tax encourages charitable giving by providing incentives when people distribute large amounts of wealth. It also promotes economic opportunity by preventing the unlimited transfer of massive inheritances from the ultra-wealthy. Claims that it harms small businesses and farms are vastly overstated. The estate tax should be reformed to close loopholes and focus on the truly wealthy, not fully repealed in a giveaway to the richest Americans at the expense of working families.
