The recent deaths of three individuals in ICE custody over just one month are alarming and unacceptable. This tragic loss of life underscores the inherent inhumanity and deadliness of the immigration detention system. With reports of rampant medical neglect, abuse, and lack of transparency at facilities like Krome and Eloy, any expansion of this system will inevitably lead to more preventable deaths. As elected officials, we have a moral and legal obligation to uphold human rights and ensure the dignity of all people. An immediate investigation into these deaths and the conditions within ICE detention centers is imperative. Furthermore, rather than allocating more funds to enable the mass detention and deportation agenda, resources should be directed towards humane and rights-respecting immigration policies that preserve family unity. The American people deserve an immigration system grounded in compassion, not cruelty. Drastic reform is needed to prevent future tragedies.
