The federal government's plan to defund and dismantle the Institute of Museum and Library Services will have devastating consequences for libraries across the nation. More than 120,000 libraries rely on the nearly $200 million in funding from IMLS to provide essential services beyond just books – from internet access and job assistance to literacy programs and support for small businesses. Libraries are beloved public spaces that foster learning, personal growth, and community development. Eliminating their primary source of federal funding will cripple their ability to serve the public, especially in rural and underserved areas. This shortsighted decision dismisses the vital role libraries play and the value they provide to millions of Americans. I urge you to oppose this attack on libraries and fight to preserve funding for these indispensable institutions.
