As a Michigander, I am appalled by the detention of a Guatemalan woman and her two U.S. citizen children for five days in an office building at the Detroit-Windsor border crossing. Sarahi's account of being held in a windowless office space, with inadequate food, hygiene, and medical care for her children is unacceptable. This ordeal, sparked by a simple wrong turn, highlights serious issues with immigration enforcement practices at the northern border. While procedures must be followed, detaining children in improper facilities violates legal principles like the Flores Agreement which requires adequate living conditions for minors. U.S. citizens should never face such mistreatment. A full investigation into this incident is warranted to uphold constitutional rights and human dignity for all people, regardless of immigration status. America must treat families, especially children, with compassion – not subject them to traumatic ordeals over documentation issues alone.
