The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act is an alarming piece of legislation that would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters across the country. Requiring all voters to provide documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) like a passport or birth certificate every time they need to register or update their voter registration is an excessive and unnecessary burden. This stringent requirement would nullify convenient methods of voter registration such as mail-in, online, and voter registration drives, which have been instrumental in keeping voter rolls accurate and up-to-date. An estimated 21.3 million Americans lack easy access to the forms of DPOC mandated by the SAVE Act, disproportionately impacting marginalized communities like married women, lower-income individuals, rural residents, people with disabilities, and voters of color. Voter registration modernizations have made it easier for eligible citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote, and the SAVE Act would undo decades of progress. There are already robust protections in place against non-citizen voting, rendering this legislation unnecessary. I urge you to protect the integrity of our elections by voting against the SAVE Act, which would disenfranchise millions and undermine our democracy.
