Stop Trump's Abuse of Emergency Powers—Defend Our Democracy Now
To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Huizenga
From: A constituent in Dorr, MI
March 11
I am writing to express my outrage and deep frustration over President Trump’s blatant abuse of national emergency powers. His repeated use of these declarations to bypass Congress and push through radical policies on tariffs, energy, and immigration is an affront to our democracy and a dangerous overreach of executive authority. This cannot stand, and I demand that you take immediate action to stop it. The so-called “national energy emergency” is a sham. There is no energy crisis—this is nothing more than a political ploy to fast-track fossil fuel projects and gut environmental protections. Meanwhile, his revival of the southern border emergency is a transparent attempt to revive his failed border wall agenda and impose draconian immigration policies. These actions are not about addressing real emergencies; they are about consolidating power and sidelining Congress. And let’s not forget the tariffs. Using emergency powers to slap tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China under the guise of addressing fentanyl and border security is absurd and reckless. Tariffs are a serious economic tool that should be implemented through a transparent, deliberative process—not through unilateral executive actions that ignore Congress and the American people. This is not governance; this is authoritarianism. The National Emergencies Act was supposed to provide safeguards, but those safeguards have failed. Congress has allowed these powers to be abused for far too long. Dozens of emergencies remain in effect, some for decades, with no meaningful oversight or accountability. This is unacceptable. I am furious that our democracy is being eroded in this way, and I demand that you take immediate action to stop it. Here’s what you must do: 1. **Reform the National Emergencies Act**: Strengthen the law to prevent this kind of abuse. Define what constitutes a true emergency, impose strict time limits, and ensure that Congress has the power to terminate emergencies without being blocked by a presidential veto. 2. **Reclaim Congressional Authority**: Pass legislation to rein in the president’s ability to use emergency powers for non-emergency purposes. Congress must reassert its constitutional role in matters of trade, energy, and immigration. 3. **Investigate and Hold Accountable**: Launch hearings to examine the current use of emergency powers and their impact on our democracy. The American people deserve to know how these powers are being abused and who is enabling it. This is not a partisan issue—this is about protecting our democracy from an executive branch that is increasingly acting like a dictatorship. If you fail to act, you are complicit in the erosion of our constitutional system. I am watching closely, and I will remember your actions—or lack thereof—when it comes time to vote. Do your job. Protect our democracy. Act now.
