Demand due process and fair trials for asylum seekers

To: Sen. Capito, Sen. Justice, Rep. Moore

From: A constituent in Stonewood, WV

March 27

The recent deportation of Jerce Reyes Barrios, a Venezuelan soccer player and father of two, to a prison in El Salvador raises serious concerns about due process and human rights. According to his attorney, the evidence against him being a gang member is flimsy and limited to a tattoo and a common hand gesture from social media posts over a decade old. As someone who followed proper asylum procedures and had no criminal record, he should have been allowed a fair hearing before an impartial judge to assess the merits of his case. It is deeply troubling that the Department of Homeland Security appears to be making snap judgments based on questionable evidence, denying individuals like Mr. Barrios their legal right to make their case for asylum. Seeking refuge from violence and instability is not a crime, and those fleeing such circumstances deserve to have their claims evaluated through an established judicial process, not summarily deported based on circumstantial accusations. I urge you to demand transparency from DHS regarding the purported evidence against Mr. Barrios and other Venezuelan refugees, and to uphold the principles of due process enshrined in our laws. No one should face life-altering consequences without the opportunity for a fair trial and the presumption of innocence. It is imperative that we protect the human rights of asylum seekers and ensure their cases receive full and impartial consideration.
