Public libraries are vital community resources that promote literacy, education, and access to information for all. However, the Ohio Public Library Information Network (OPLIN) and the State Library of Ohio are facing funding uncertainties that jeopardize their ability to serve Ohioans effectively. The proposed state budget for the upcoming biennium does not allocate dedicated funding for these critical institutions. Without stable funding, libraries statewide may be forced to reduce services, materials, and staffing levels, ultimately limiting access to essential resources for vulnerable populations. We cannot allow this to happen. Public libraries are cornerstones of our communities, providing free access to books, computers, educational programs, and reliable information sources. They serve as equalizers, ensuring that knowledge and opportunities are available to all, regardless of socioeconomic status. Libraries also support workforce development by providing professionals with career development support, skill development resources, quiet places to work, and free WiFi. I urge you to advocate for dedicated funding for OPLIN and the State Library of Ohio in the state budget. Investing in our libraries is an investment in the future of our state and its people. Please prioritize this issue and ensure that these invaluable institutions have the resources they need to continue their vital work.
