Freedom to Read

To: Rep. Appelbaum, Gov. Kehoe, Sen. McCreery

From: A verified voter in Saint Louis, MO

March 17

Please consider maintaining support for Sora, the student version of the OverDrive/Libby app. I volunteered at my 12 year old's middle school and had a chance to talk with the librarian about how they use Sora. The individual districts choose what is available to their students, not OverDrive. Children's access is determined by grade level so little kids don't have access to high school books. It seems weird that you would go after the business. It is like closing a grocery store because you don't like pickles. I just don't understand. It is Parents who should be the keeping an eye on what their kids read. Parents are going to know if a book is going to be too scary or too violent. I just don't know what you consider inappropriate or explicit. Where is the trust? There are many ideas I would rather my child explore through print rather than in real life. I am just not happy with politicians or the corporate people at Overdrive deciding what my kids have access to. That's up to me and the librarians. The other super sad thing about this it you are going to hurt rural libraries who rely on grants from Missouri Research and Education Network at the state level or the Institute of Museum and Library Services at the federal level. Please think about the Freedom to Read for all of Missouri's children.
