The recent escalation of violence in Gaza by the Israeli military is deeply concerning, with the airstrikes claiming hundreds of Palestinian lives and causing immense suffering. While recognizing Israel's security concerns, the disproportionate use of force and targeting of civilian areas without warning is unacceptable and a violation of international humanitarian law. The Palestinian people have an inherent right to life and self-determination on their lands. A broader diplomatic solution must be pursued to address the root causes of the conflict and prevent further loss of innocent lives. The strike on Gaza, as stated by Prime Minister Netanyahu himself, appears motivated by political considerations rather than a credible security threat. Maintaining a steady supply of arms to Israel under these circumstances enables and perpetuates a cycle of violence. Therefore, I urge an immediate arms embargo on Israel until substantive steps are taken to de-escalate tensions, lift the blockade on Gaza, and work towards a just and lasting peace agreement that upholds the rights of all people in the region. Funding should instead be directed towards humanitarian aid, development, and support for credible peace negotiations.
