Reject harmful corporal punishment in West Virginia schools

To: Del. Hite, Gov. Morrisey, Sen. Willis, Sen. Thorne

From: A constituent in Martinsburg, WV

March 6

I strongly urge reconsideration of House Bill 2545, which would reintroduce corporal punishment in West Virginia public schools. Decades of research have shown that physically disciplining children is detrimental to their well-being and academic performance. It can lead to increased aggression, antisocial behavior, mental health issues, and impaired cognitive development. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry clearly opposes corporal punishment due to these harmful effects. Rather than reviving an archaic and ineffective disciplinary method, the focus should be on implementing positive behavior interventions and promoting a nurturing, supportive school environment. There are proven alternatives that reinforce desired behaviors without inflicting pain or trauma on students. Allowing the physical punishment of children goes against modern principles of child psychology and human rights. Schools must prioritize the safety, dignity and positive development of all students. Corporal punishment has no place in an educational setting striving to provide a quality learning experience. I urge the withdrawal of this misguided legislation in favor of progressive, evidence-based disciplinary policies that cultivate thriving school communities.
