Support the Protect America’s Workforce Act - Stop Trump’s union-busting!

To: Rep. Morrison, Sen. Smith, Sen. Klobuchar

From: A constituent in Minneapolis, MN

April 2

I am writing to you as a concerned citizen and advocate for the rights of American workers. I urge you to support the Protect America’s Workforce Act (PAWA) and recognize the crucial role it plays in safeguarding the rights and well-being of working people across our nation. This legislation is not just a political issue—it is a moral and economic necessity. The past few decades have seen a significant erosion of workers' rights and protections, as well as a growing inequality between workers and corporate entities. PAWA would address this imbalance by strengthening protections for workers, making it harder for employers to exploit vulnerable employees, and ensuring that labor laws are enforced effectively. Here are a few key reasons why PAWA is critical: Restoring Accountability in Labor Law Enforcement: One of the most important provisions of PAWA is its emphasis on holding employers accountable for violations of labor laws. Currently, penalties for infractions can be minimal, and enforcement is inconsistent. PAWA would strengthen penalties for violations and ensure that companies who disregard labor laws face meaningful consequences. Protecting Workers’ Right to Organize: At its core, PAWA seeks to protect workers' fundamental right to organize and collectively bargain. Recent years have seen a decline in union membership and rising anti-union tactics from employers. PAWA would make it harder for employers to interfere with or discourage unionization efforts, ensuring that workers can freely and fairly join unions without fear of retaliation. Increasing Worker Safety: Workers should never have to choose between their job and their safety. PAWA would strengthen workplace safety regulations, reduce unsafe working conditions, and increase oversight of employers who put their workers at risk. Closing Gaps in Wage Enforcement: Wage theft is a rampant issue in many sectors, disproportionately affecting low-income workers. PAWA would bolster efforts to ensure that workers are paid fairly for their labor by closing loopholes and improving wage enforcement. This is especially important for those in service industries or gig economies who may be vulnerable to wage exploitation. Supporting Economic Recovery: By passing PAWA, Congress would demonstrate a commitment to not only improving the lives of American workers but also stimulating economic growth. Ensuring fair wages, safer working conditions, and stronger unions contributes to a more robust economy. When workers have the support and protections they need, they are better positioned to spend, save, and invest in the economy, which benefits all Americans. PAWA is not simply about supporting labor unions or individual workers—it’s about securing the economic future of our nation. Strong, safe, and fair workplaces create a more equitable society and are the foundation of a thriving economy. It is essential that we modernize our labor laws to address the challenges of the 21st century workforce.
