Do not punish Rep. Green for speaking the truth

To: Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Green, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Houston, TX

March 5

The House Republicans' move to censure Representative Al Green for disrupting the President's speech is a concerning action that risks stifling dissent and free speech. While decorum should be maintained, punishing Green for voicing objections during the speech could set a troubling precedent of squashing legitimate protest and debate in Congress. As elected representatives, lawmakers have a fundamental right and responsibility to voice dissent on issues they feel strongly about, even if it involves disrupting standard proceedings at times. Censuring Green could chill other members from speaking out forcefully in the future. I urge you to defend Al Green's right to protest and reject this censure effort, as it poses a threat to robust political discourse and the democratic process itself.
