Uphold due process, return lawful resident Kilmar Abrego Garcia

To: Sen. Durbin, Rep. Miller, Sen. Duckworth

April 1

The deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a legal resident with protected status, to an El Salvadoran prison due to an "administrative error" is a gross violation of due process and the rule of law. As admitted by the government's own court filings, Abrego Garcia had no criminal record and was granted withholding of removal status after proving he would likely face gang threats if deported to El Salvador. Yet he was apprehended by ICE, denied any hearing, and forcibly deported under the pretext of being a gang member with no substantiated evidence presented. This blatant disregard for judicial rulings granting legal protections sets a dangerous precedent of unchecked executive power to deprive immigrants of their rights without justification. Abrego Garcia's continued unlawful detention in an infamous Salvadoran prison, separated from his U.S. citizen wife and disabled child, is a grave injustice that undermines America's commitment to human rights and due process. Immediate steps must be taken to secure his safe return and uphold the sanctity of our nation's immigration laws. Failure to do so erodes the judicial system's authority and our standing as a nation of laws. Many in this administration claim to be Christians or follow Christianity teachings. Yet, when it comes to their actions, they do not follow the teachings of the Bible that explain that we should welcome the immigrant and help them. The cruelty of this administration's approach is appalling.
