I am writing to express my strong opposition to Michigan House Resolution HJR B. As a concerned resident of Ann Arbor, MI, I believe that this resolution poses significant risks to the well-being and future of our state and its residents and their essential right to vote.
While I understand that the resolution may be presented with the intent of addressing voter fraud, I firmly believe that its implications, if passed, would have detrimental effects on voter rights – and there has not been any substantial evidence of voter fraud. I am particularly concerned about the cost of purchasing a passport or revising identification – it essentially imposes a voter tax and disproportionally affects people of color, and people experiencing poverty and homelessness. It also will disproportionally affect women, as many have changed their names after marriage. They now do not have exact name matches from their birth certificate to their state ID, and under this law would not be allowed to vote.
I demand you and your colleagues in the Michigan House of Representatives and State Senate oppose this resolution. This resolution amounts to an assault on the most vulnerable voters in our society by attempting to cut off their route to voice their needs through voting, under the guise of protecting voters – this sickening resolution must not pass.
As our state’s leadership, please focus on policies that foster inclusivity, equity, and the well-being of all residents.
