Respect gender identities - no constraints on ID changes

To: Rep. Mathis, Rep. Gutierrez, Sen. Sundareshan

From: A verified voter in Tucson, AZ

March 22

Opposition to Arizona HB2438: Discriminatory Bill Forcing Trans Erasure Legislation restricting gender marker changes on identification documents unjustly discriminates against transgender and non-binary individuals. Such measures force people to carry IDs that misrepresent their authentic gender identity, inflicting psychological harm and putting them at heightened risk in situations where ID must be presented. Imposing medically unneeded surgery requirements for updates creates financial and access barriers. An "X" gender marker allows non-binary people accurate self-representation. Identities must be respected, not policed through unjust constraints legally encoding transphobia. I urge opposition to Arizona HB2438 promoting trans erasure and affirmation of the right to freely update documents aligning with one's lived identity and experience.
