I am writing to urge you to support the bipartisan legislation sponsored by Senators Chuck Grassley and Maria Cantwell that would limit the President’s authority to impose tariffs without congressional approval. This bill is a critical step toward restoring balance between the executive and legislative branches when it comes to trade policy.
No president—past, present, or future—should have the unilateral power to impose tariffs that can upend our economy and strain relationships with global partners. When tariffs are enacted without congressional oversight, they effectively act as taxes imposed on American businesses and consumers, without representation.
This kind of unchecked authority undermines one of the foundational principles of our democracy. Taxation without representation was the very issue that drove our foreparents to rebel against Great Britain and establish the United States. We should not allow it to resurface in modern form through executive overreach.
This legislation is not about partisanship; it is about checks and balances. It is about ensuring the legislative branch reclaims its rightful authority over trade policy. The time to act is now—before more damage is done under the guise of "America First" rhetoric that ignores the complexity of global supply chains and punishes our own consumers and businesses.
Please support this important bill and stand up for the Constitution, for economic stability, and for the American people.
