Increased funding should be directed towards expanding detention capacity with proper facilities rather than forcing people into overcrowded, unsanitary holding areas. Immigration violations are civil offenses and detention should be an absolute last resort, reserved only for those who pose a legitimate threat. Alternatives to detention, such as monitored release programs, should be prioritized. Comprehensive immigration reform is needed to address systemic issues within enforcement and create a fair, humane system consistent with American principles. In the meantime, standards of care in detention must be raised and facilities with repeated violations should face consequences. No human being deserves to be treated in the unconscionable manner described.
