I'm writing to you today because I am extremely concerned and frustrated with the Democratic Party’s unwillingness to be the kind of opposition party we desperately need.
We need our elected officials to be just as angry as we are; to be willing to think creatively and courageously; who aren’t so focused on decorum that they forget we have a democracy to save. More than that, we need Democrats who are unified in their opposition. The piecemeal approach taken during Trump’s Congressional address was just the most recent example of how our party lacks coordination and unity.
The hard part is already done: Democrats now have an engaged, energized audience who want to take action and stand up against the current Administration. We are only asking that you lead.
We need Democrats to get out of Washington and go on the road. We need Democrats to host and promote nationwide tours, filling venues, speaking to crowds, and earning press and social media coverage. If 83-year-old Bernie Sanders can do it, other Democrats can too.
We need Democrats to host, promote, and lead large-scale protests in strategic locations across the country. Appear in local media. On local TV. On local podcasts. Be loud and unafraid.
We need Democrats to engage diverse social media influencers to share these events and protests on their chosen platforms, and amplify the messages they’re capturing.
We need a highly-organized Democratic war room in D.C. that fights misinformation, responds strategically, and gives citizens specific calls to action. We need to dispense with the consultant-approved talking points, and instead flood the zone in the same way that the current Administration has.
We are looking to you and your colleagues to lead with courage and conviction. But right now, it seems that Party leadership can’t commit to a single message or strategy, and far too many Democratic members lack the boldness that this moment requires.
Prove us wrong.
Thank you.
