An Open Letter
To: Gov. Cox
From: A constituent in Saratoga Springs, UT
March 10
I am writing to urge you to veto HB 77, which would ban pride flags and other so-called “political” symbols from Utah’s public schools. This bill is a direct attack on inclusivity and sends a harmful message to LGBTQ+ students, who already face higher risks of bullying and mental health struggles.
Schools should be places where every student feels seen, supported, and safe. Banning pride flags under the guise of neutrality does not create an inclusive environment—it does the opposite. It tells LGBTQ+ youth that their identities are controversial and unwelcome. It undermines teachers’ ability to foster classrooms that promote belonging and respect for all students.
Moreover, HB 77 opens the door to dangerous ambiguity. What counts as “political”? Who decides? This legislation will only lead to unnecessary censorship, fear, and division in schools, rather than fostering the safe and supportive learning environment that all students deserve.
Governor Cox, I urge you to stand up for Utah’s students and veto HB 77. Your leadership can send a strong message that Utah values all its students, regardless of their background or identity.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
