Reject harmful student suppression bills, protect LGBTQ+ youth

To: Gov. Hobbs, Rep. Mathis, Rep. Gutierrez, Sen. Sundareshan

March 7

Title: Stop SB1002 - Harmful Student Suppression Bill Student suppression bills like SB1002 that create a hostile environment for LGBTQ+ students in schools are unacceptable and harmful. Forcing students to be outed against their will, intentionally misgendering or deadnaming them, and instituting discriminatory policies violate their basic dignity and rights. All students deserve to feel safe, respected, and supported at school regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. These suppressive measures promote stigma, marginalization, and put vulnerable youth at increased risk of bullying, depression, and suicidal ideation. I urge you to reject SB1002 and any legislation that enables such cruelty and instead prioritize the well-being of all students by ensuring schools are inclusive, affirmative spaces. Protect LGBTQ+ youth from further harm and discrimination.
