Stop Forcing Religion Into Texas Classrooms

To: Sen. Zaffirini, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Rep. Flores, Gov. Abbott

From: A verified voter in Austin, TX

March 22

I am writing to express my profound disappointment regarding your support for legislation mandating the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms. This initiative not only violates the constitutional principle of separation of church and state but also undermines the religious freedom of all Texans. Over 160 faith leaders across Texas have opposed this bill, emphasizing that “the responsibility for religious education belongs to families and faith communities, not the public school system” (Interfaith Alliance, March 2025). By imposing a specific religious text in public schools, you risk alienating students of diverse faiths and beliefs, thereby fostering division rather than unity. Furthermore, such legislation contradicts established legal precedents. The Supreme Court, in Stone v. Graham (1980), ruled that mandatory display of the Ten Commandments in public schools is unconstitutional, as it lacks a secular legislative purpose. Ignoring this precedent not only invites legal challenges but also wastes taxpayer resources on defending indefensible policies. Your duty as elected officials is to uphold the Constitution and represent all constituents, regardless of their religious affiliations. By promoting this bill, you are prioritizing personal beliefs over constitutional obligations and the diverse perspectives of your constituents. I urge you to reconsider your stance and focus on policies that respect religious freedom and uphold the separation of church and state.
