Unethical tariff

To: Rep. Cuellar, Sen. Cruz, Pres. Trump, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Seguin, TX

April 3

The administration's decision to impose reciprocal tariffs aims to address long-standing trade imbalances and unfair practices by other countries that have undermined American manufacturing, supply chains, and economic security. However, the widespread tariffs could adversely impact domestic businesses and consumers, disrupt supply chains further, and risk retaliatory actions from trading partners. I urge you to reconsider this approach and instead pursue targeted negotiations to eliminate specific trade barriers and establish a level playing field based on fair and reciprocal treatment. Blanket tariffs are a blunt instrument that may cause unintended economic harm. A more strategic path forward would be to work multilaterally through existing frameworks to address concerns over non-tariff barriers, currency practices, and intellectual property rights violations in a manner that avoids escalating trade tensions and protectionism. American economic strength lies in our ability to compete globally with innovation and quality products and services. Promoting open and rules-based trade, while addressing legitimate grievances through diplomacy, can better advance our national interests in the long run. I encourage exploring alternative measures that uphold our economic sovereignty without resorting to sweeping tariffs that could undermine American competitiveness and prosperity.
