We are deeply concerned about Elon Musk's recent comments disparaging Social Security as a "Ponzi scheme" and his push to downsize the program by closing offices and curtailing telephone services. Social Security is a vital earned benefit that millions of Americans have paid into over their working lives, not a fraudulent scheme. Musk's rhetoric and attempts to disrupt services are highly concerning and risk leaving vulnerable seniors without access to the benefits they rely on. While rooting out any waste and fraud is reasonable, the evidence shows improper Social Security payments constitute less than 1% of total benefits paid. Pursuing drastic cuts under the guise of fraud prevention appears disingenuous. We urge you to forcefully reject Musk's alarming proposals that could undermine this crucial program and leave many struggling. Social Security must be protected and strengthened, not attacked and destabilized through office closures and service reductions that make it harder for the elderly and disabled to access their earned benefits. Please act swiftly to rein in these dangerous efforts that threaten the financial security of our most vulnerable citizens.
