I’m writing as a concerned Ohioan who finds the Ohio House’s proposal to eliminate the Public Library Fund not only short-sighted but offensive to the values of public service. This move would devastate libraries across our state, stripping communities of vital access to education, technology, early childhood programs, job resources, and safe spaces for all ages.
If you believe these cuts reflect the will of your constituents, you are grossly out of touch with the people you claim to represent. Libraries are among the most trusted and relied-upon public institutions we have — and they are already doing more with less. Reducing their funding by $100 million over two years is not fiscal responsibility. It's an attack on opportunity, literacy, and equity.
Let me be clear: we are watching. If you support this plan, you are making it obvious that public service is no longer your priority — and you should strongly consider a different career path, one where disregard for community well-being is more acceptable. Because it has no place in public office.
I urge you to reject this harmful amendment and fully restore the Public Library Fund as outlined in Governor DeWine’s proposed budget. This is not a partisan issue — it’s a moral one. Protect our libraries. Protect our communities.
