congress Urgent: Protect Social Security Benefits I am writing to express my deep concern about proposed cuts to the Social Security Administration (SSA) workforce and office closures, which threaten the stability of essential benefits for millions of Americans. Social Security provides critical monthly payments to retirees, people with disabilities, and their families, serving as a vital safety net for 72.5 million people. Despite assurances that Social Security benefits would not be reduced, actions are being taken that severely undermine the program’s ability to function. Plans to cut the SSA workforce by up to 50% and close hundreds of local and regional offices will drastically reduce access to assistance, particularly for those who are low-income, disabled, or lack digital literacy and internet access. These closures, currently concentrated in the South but expected to expand nationwide, will disproportionately harm the most vulnerable members of our society. For 80 years, the SSA has never missed a benefit payment. However, former SSA Commissioner Martin O’Malley has warned that these drastic workforce reductions could lead to a total system collapse, potentially disrupting payments within 30 to 90 days. Congress must act swiftly to oppose these dangerous cuts and ensure that Social Security remains a reliable and accessible lifeline for all who depend on it. I urge you to take immediate action to protect SSA funding, preserve local offices, and maintain the integrity of this essential program. Thank you for your time and attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your response.
