By now, I am sure you have heard about the LEGAL immigrants who are being detained or having their visas revoked for no reason other than for exercising their free speech rights to express an opinion the current administration disagrees with. The administration is using the fiction that disagreeing with them amounts to terrorism or a national security threat--and I am sure some of the people detained may be terrorist sympathizers, but the overwhelming majority are not. They are just expressing a view with which the president does not agree. This is a very dangerous precedent. It is a direct authoritarian assault on the First Amendment and the freedoms we all hold dear as Americans. It is a quite transparent attempt to stifle the dissent that is fundamental to a functioning democracy. I may not agree with everything these individuals say or stand for, but I believe everyone has the right to express their views. Anything that infringes on that right has a chilling effect on the free exchange of ideas that is at the heart of democracy. And if they can detain legal immigrants for doing this, they can also detain citizens by simply claiming they are not citizens and then denying them the due process they would need to prove their citizenship status. So, I ask you this: As my elected representative, what are you going to do to defend and protect the Constitution? How will you try to counter this blatant assault on the Constitution?
