Reject indiscriminate immigration enforcement, uphold due process rights

The report from The Guardian indicates that immigration enforcement actions have substantially increased under the new administration, with a focus on arresting immigrants regardless of criminal history. This indiscriminate approach raises concerns about racial profiling and undermining community trust in law enforcement. The decision by Georgia's governor to embrace federal immigration enforcement training through the 287(g) program is particularly troubling. Past evaluations found these partnerships led to civil rights violations and strained relations between police and immigrant communities. Rather than enhancing public safety, this move is likely to breed fear and mistrust, making immigrants more reluctant to report crimes or cooperate with authorities. While the stated goals may be to target dangerous criminals, the data shows immigration arrests are increasingly sweeping up ordinary immigrants without criminal records. This approach is costly, inhumane, and antithetical to American values of due process and equal protection under the law. Instead of blindly expanding failed enforcement tactics, elected officials should pursue balanced immigration policies that uphold constitutional rights, focus limited resources on real threats, and provide a path to legal status for those contributing to our communities and economy. Doubling down on the current trajectory will only sow more division, insecurity and injustice. Georgian families and public safety deserve better.
