Secure release of legal Bhutanese-Nepali residents in Dauphin County

To: Sen. Kim, Rep. Madsen, Gov. Shapiro

From: A constituent in Harrisburg, PA

March 18

The actions taken by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain five legal, permanent residents of the United States from the Bhutanese Nepali community in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania are deeply concerning. These individuals have gone through the proper channels to resettle in this country and have established lives here as valued members of the community. Uprooting them from their families and transferring some to out-of-state detention centers, despite their legal status, is an unacceptable violation of their rights. This type of enforcement action does not promote safety or justice, but rather instills fear and undermines the principles of a nation built by immigrants. We pride ourselves on being a country of laws and due process, yet these detentions appear to disregard that very foundation without justification provided. Refugees who have complied with all requirements should not face such harsh treatment simply for being different. I urge you to take immediate action to secure the release of these five individuals and reunite them with their loved ones in Dauphin County. Their continued detention serves no purpose other than to persecute members of an already vulnerable population who are trying to build better lives. We cannot turn our backs on those who have followed the rules and contributed so much to making our communities stronger through their hard work, culture, and values. Protecting the rights of all legal residents, regardless of background, is imperative to upholding America's ideals of justice and human dignity.
