Urgent: Protect IMLS from Executive Order Dismantling Our Libraries and Museums

To: Sen. Blumenthal, Rep. DeLauro, Sen. Murphy

From: A verified voter in New Haven, CT

March 16

I am writing as your constituent to express my grave concern regarding President Trump's recent executive order targeting the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This action threatens to dismantle a crucial federal agency that has provided essential support to our nation's libraries and museums for nearly three decades. The executive order, which attempts to consolidate IMLS functions under the Department of Education with significantly reduced funding and authority, would effectively gut this vital institution. The IMLS was established with bipartisan support through the Museum and Library Services Act and has consistently received backing from both parties in Congress because of its demonstrated value to communities across America. I strongly urge you to: 1. Publicly oppose this executive order and work with your colleagues to prevent its implementation 2. Reaffirm congressional support for the IMLS as an independent agency 3. Maintain or increase current funding levels for the IMLS in upcoming appropriations 4. Support legislative action to protect the IMLS from executive reorganization The IMLS provides irreplaceable support to libraries and museums in all 50 states through merit-based, peer-reviewed grants. These institutions are cornerstones of our communities that: - Provide equitable access to information, technology, and educational resources - Serve as trusted spaces for community gathering and civic engagement - Support workforce development and digital literacy - Preserve our cultural heritage and promote lifelong learning - Deliver specialized services to veterans, seniors, children, and underserved populations Executive reorganization would severely undermine these functions and disproportionately harm rural and underserved communities that rely heavily on IMLS-supported programs. Congress has consistently recognized the value of the IMLS through bipartisan support. I ask that you honor this tradition by taking immediate action to protect this crucial agency from being dismantled by executive order. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing about the specific steps you will take to preserve the IMLS and protect our nation's libraries and museums.
