Prevent funding cuts to Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

To: Gov. Ivey, Sen. Smitherman, Rep. Hendrix

From: A constituent in Birmingham, AL

April 4

The proposed $100,000 cut to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute's funding in the Alabama state budget is deeply concerning. As a site dedicated to preserving and educating about the pivotal Civil Rights struggles that took place in Birmingham, the Institute plays a vital role in upholding the truth of history and the ongoing fight for equality. Its exhibits, programs, and resources are invaluable in promoting understanding and progress on these critical issues that shape our society. Sixty-two years ago, brave individuals put their lives on the line for the cause of civil rights in Birmingham. Today, we have an obligation to honor their sacrifices by supporting institutions like the BCRI that carry their legacy forward. Eliminating funding would undermine the important work being done to foster dialogue, reconciliation, and continued growth. This cut sends the wrong message about Alabama's commitment to confronting its past and building a more just future. I urge you to protect funding for the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and reaffirm the state's dedication to preserving this essential piece of history. The truths these walls hold must never be silenced or forgotten.
