Stop deportation and crackdown on pro-Palestinian student activism.

To: Rep. Kaptur, Sen. Husted, Sen. Moreno

March 11

Protect Free Speech and Release Mahmoud Khalil Immediately The detainment and potential deportation of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and former Columbia University student, raise serious concerns about free speech rights and the crackdown on campus protests critical of Israeli policies. As a lawful permanent resident without any criminal charges, the government should meet a high bar to revoke his immigration status based solely on constitutionally protected advocacy. Khalil's role as a spokesperson for the protests does not justify retaliation through the immigration enforcement system. This action appears to be an attempt to intimidate and silence Palestinian perspectives on campuses. Upholding free expression, especially on difficult political issues, is crucial for a vibrant democracy. The targeting of Khalil and implied threat against other student activists sets a dangerous precedent that undermines civil liberties. I urge your intervention to stop Khalil's deportation proceedings and the broader crackdown on pro-Palestinian campus activism. The unlawful conduct of ICE and this administration needs to be stopped immediately.
