The Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act seeks to establish a commission to investigate the traumatic history and lasting impacts of Indian boarding schools in the United States. These schools, which operated for over a century until the late 1960s, aimed to forcibly assimilate Native American children by separating them from their families, languages, and cultures. The commission would comprehensively examine this grave injustice, locate burial sites of students, and recommend ways for the government to promote truth, healing, and reconciliation. Recognizing the severity of these events and continued suffering of survivors and communities, I urge you to support this legislation. The commission's work is vital to properly documenting this dark chapter, bringing peace to victims' descendants, safeguarding Native cultures, and taking steps to right historical wrongs against Indigenous peoples. Only through an impartial accounting and public awareness can we promote justice and prevent such policies in the future. The commission provides a path forward to acknowledge painful truths and find meaningful reconciliation and healing.
