Preserve Section 230, protect free speech online

To: Sen. Duckworth, Rep. Quigley, Sen. Durbin

From: A verified voter in Chicago, IL

March 22

We must urgently oppose any attempts to change Section 230. Repealing or weakening this vital law would have catastrophic negative consequences, empowering censorship by powerful entities like the Trump administration on a massive scale. It's a trap being set by republicans that will lead to mass censorship. Section 230 is essential for allowing websites to moderate harmful content while protecting free speech online. Without it, websites would face such enormous legal risks that it could utterly stifle online discourse and consolidate control under the few major platforms able to absorb the legal costs. There are far better solutions to address online harms without demolishing the very foundations of the open internet we all rely on. Protecting our democratic freedoms must be the paramount priority over any measures that would play directly into the hands of authoritarians seeking to silence critics and dissent.
