I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I oppose legislation such as the SAVE Act, which would create needless barriers and less access to voting for many people. Our laws in place both in states and on the federal level already provide many assurances that voters are U.S. citizens. Legislation like the SAVE Act only adds more layers of red tape that will cause real harm for groups like the disabled, the poor, and married women. Having to obtain added paperwork when you already have proven you are a registered voter puts barriers in place that require added time and money to track down additional documentation.
I personally would fall into this category, as a married woman whose birth certificate shows my unmarried name. I know others who are disabled or would experience other difficulties getting additional paperwork.
These types of laws do not serve the American people. There is no solid evidence that non-U.S. citizens are sneaking into elections. If there has been erosion in our confidence about elections, it is not from this. It is from groups that would intimidate voters from coming to the polls, who would make it harder for the vulnerable people among us to vote, or who would storm the Capitol with violence when they dislike the verified results of a fair election.
Please speak up against the SAVE Act and similar pieces of legislation. They are not in the interests of the American voters. They are not in the interests of fair elections. Our elections should be open to all U.S. citizens, in a way that is reasonable for all to achieve.
Thank you for all you do to serve the people of Wisconsin and all of us who voted for you.
