Abolish DOGE

To: Sen. Cruz, Rep. Van Duyne, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Dallas, TX

March 10

I am writing concerning my continued alarm at the Department of Government Efficiency’s haphazard slashing of governmental agency staff and offices, and to ask you to put an end to it. At the apparent behest of this Republican administration, DOGE is gutting federal programs with seemingly little idea of what those programs do. The unvetted twenty-somethings making these important decisions appear to have no idea how a government functions, and instead are conducting themselves as if they are running an internet startup. These job losses among federal employees are staggering blows to our unemployment numbers. The feckless DOGE cuts are already hurting our economy and the stock market, which were booming only two months ago. In the six weeks since they took over, DOGE has repeatedly tried to re-staff several agencies after cuts went too far. That is anything but ‘efficient.’ To make matters worse, they are doing this by illegally bypassing Congress’ authority. You and your Congressional colleagues have the power to stop this mayhem. You must act to defund DOGE and halt Elon Musk's unilateral dismantling of federal agencies. How? DOGE has exploited funding loopholes and insufficient oversight in order to wield unchecked power in bypassing legal processes. Its primary funding sources are the Information Technology Oversight and Reform (ITOR) account ($75 million in unobligated funds). ITOR funds from the American Rescue Plan ($200 million through 2024), and Economy Act transfers from other agencies ($39 million so far). By rescinding these unobligated funds and prohibiting their use for DOGE activities, Congress can rein in DOGE's overreach and unconstitutional actions. If you and your colleagues refuse to act, this crisis will only escalate. Restoring the separation of powers is crucial to preventing further harm to government operations and public trust. Congress must exercise its Constitutional authority over appropriations in order to rein in DOGE. My wife and I strongly urge you and your colleagues reclaim your power as part of the legislative branch and put an end to DOGE’s haphazard dismantling of our government and tanking of our economy.
