I am writing as a voter who supported each of you to represent me and my fellow New Yorkers. The federal government’s illegal arrest and detention of Mahmoud Khalil is an unacceptable attack on our constitutional rights, and your silence on this matter is deeply concerning.
On March 11, 2025, a letter was sent to the Department of Homeland Security demanding Mahmoud Khalil’s immediate release. While many members of Congress signed this urgent call for justice, your signatures were notably absent. At a time when our rights to free speech and protest are under direct assault by the Trump-Musk administration, failing to take a stand is not an option.
The people of New York expect you to defend our First Amendment rights and oppose the administration’s blatant attempt to criminalize political activism. The illegal targeting of Mahmoud Khalil for his advocacy should alarm anyone who believes in the rule of law. I urge you to publicly condemn this unconstitutional action, demand his immediate release, and fight against the growing authoritarianism threatening this country.
We elected you to stand up for us. Now is the time to prove that our trust was not misplaced.
