The detention of Fabian Schmidt, a German national with a green card living in Nashua, New Hampshire, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Boston Logan International Airport raises serious concerns. According to his family, Schmidt was subjected to violent interrogation, stripped naked, and forced into a cold shower following his detainment on March 7th after returning from Luxembourg. Schmidt is an electrical engineer who has lived in the United States since his teenage years. While he has struggled with addiction in the past and had a misdemeanor charge over a decade ago, these past issues do not justify the alleged inhumane treatment he endured. As immigration attorney Ron Abramson stated, the disproportionate response to Schmidt's situation is "indefensible" and emblematic of an "enforcement first mindset" that disregards basic human rights. I urge you to investigate this case thoroughly and hold ICE accountable for any violations of due process or human rights abuses. No individual, regardless of immigration status, should be subjected to such dehumanizing treatment. It is imperative that we uphold the principles of human dignity and ensure that our immigration enforcement agencies operate within the bounds of the law and basic decency. I request that you take immediate action to address this deeply troubling incident and prevent such egregious conduct from occurring in the future.
