Reject Trump's assault on presidential term limits, defend democracy

To: Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand, Rep. Langworthy

From: A verified voter in Elmira, NY

April 1

Mr. Trump's recent comments regarding potential strategies to circumvent the 22nd Amendment's limit on presidential terms are deeply concerning and undermine the foundations of American democracy. The constitutional ban on serving more than two terms was established precisely to safeguard against a slide towards authoritarianism or a de facto monarchy. While legal theories exist about potential loopholes, the intent behind the amendment is clear - no individual should wield that much consolidated power indefinitely. As citizens committed to upholding the rule of law, we must forcefully reject any attempts to subvert term limits, no matter their legal trappings. Doing so would irreparably erode constitutional checks and balances. Mr. Trump's cavalier musings about overstaying his welcome in office reveal a disturbing disregard for the democratic principles he swore to protect. We urge you to make clear through all available means that circumventing presidential term limits is intolerable and unacceptable in the United States of America. Our nation's founding vision of limited government power must be vigorously defended against anyone who would undermine it, no matter how powerful. The future of American democracy rests on this principle being upheld without exception.
