As a current graduate student, I rely heavily on the Department of Education for funding my education through federal student loans and programs like FAFSA. The Department's closure would severely impact funding sources like federal student loans, grants, and financial aid programs that millions, including myself, depend on to pursue higher education. Dismantling the department and relegating education matters to individual states risks creating disparities, as resource allocation would depend on each state's financial capacity. Populous states may thrive, while less populous ones could struggle, leading to an uneven playing field and students being left behind. Maintaining a federal agency overseeing education is essential to upholding standards, enforcing non-discrimination laws, and providing equal opportunities regardless of geography or demographics. The potential consequences of eliminating the Department of Education are far-reaching and detrimental to our nation's future.
