Prioritize Social Security's functionality and funding

To: Sen. Cassidy, Sen. Kennedy, Rep. Carter

From: A verified voter in New Orleans, LA

March 26

The Social Security Administration is facing immense challenges that are jeopardizing its ability to serve millions of Americans who rely on these critical benefits. Severe staffing shortages, funding cuts, misguided policy changes, and technological breakdowns are creating a perfect storm, leaving seniors, disabled individuals, and vulnerable populations struggling to access their hard-earned benefits. This unacceptable situation demands immediate attention and remedial action. We urge you to take decisive steps to reverse the damaging cuts and reforms imposed by the Trump administration and Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency. These reckless actions have destabilized the agency, compromising its core mission of providing reliable service and timely payments. The resulting turmoil, from crashing websites to hours-long phone wait times and overwhelmed field offices, is causing significant hardship for those relying on Social Security's lifeline. For many of our constituents, Social Security is their primary or sole source of income in retirement. Allowing this vital program to be defunded and upended would be a betrayal of the promises made to American workers who paid into the system throughout their careers. We implore you to prioritize the well-being of our nation's seniors and protect the integrity of Social Security by rejecting further attacks on its operations and funding. Robust congressional oversight and legislative action may be necessary to restore the agency's capacity to fulfill its essential role.
