I have been shocked by the cavalier manner with which our Secretary of Defense and the President’s National Security Advisor handle our nation’s secrets. It is incompressible that Secretary Hegseth and Mr. Waltz would share information about an ongoing military operation over a group chat on Signal rather than go through the proper, secure channels. By sharing this information over Signal, Secretary Hegseth and Mr. Waltz put our men and women in uniform in danger. What would they have done if our enemies had decrypted their chat and gained access to information about the Yemen strike? Their actions also undermine the Trump administration’s criticisms of former President Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. President Trump lambasted both of them for their supposed mishandling of classified information, particularly Secretary Clinton and her infamous private email server. This breach of public trust on the part of Secretary Hegseth and Mr. Waltz cannot go unpunished. I urge you to use Congress’ oversight power to uncover how this security failure unfolded. Why are cabinet members sharing sensitive information over Signal and how did a reporter get added to their group chat? Someone must be held accountable for this fiasco. Put pressure on Secretary Hegseth and Mr. Waltz to take responsibility for their actions and, if necessary, resign.
