I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I am disturbed and disheartened by the current battle for the Wisconsin Supreme Court seat.
While I realize that all elections are politics at some level, the vast reams of money that have poured into the campaigns on both sides -- Crawford and Schimel alike -- is absurd. People are taking advantages of loopholes such as being able to give to the PACs or state political parties, circumventing the caps on supporting individual candidates.
This is wrong and a mockery of our laws, which is especially ironic in a race for a position as judge. Not only that, but it creates a perception of illegality and partiality in whoever wins, and casts that shadow over our justice system as a whole.
I want us to be able to trust our justice system in Wisconsin. I want people to feel confident that our judges and courts make decisions based upon the laws, not upon whoever paid for them to be there.
Call out today for changes in our regulations so that this type of subversion will not happen again. Campaign contributions should be limited, period, not given loopholes that allow for unlimited contributions from any source.
