Social programs

To: Rep. Miller, Sen. Durbin, Sen. Duckworth

From: A constituent in Pana, IL

March 12

I have written to your office several times and have seen little to no change in the legislation. I am an ordained minister and a social worker for the State of Illinois and I am very concerned about cuts to the social safety net programs such as medicare, medicaid and social security. I work primarily in child protection services and many of the families I serve, including children. There is a high poverty rate in Illinois, most prominently in Southern Illinois where there is a lack of industry and sustainable jobs. This is not the time to slash programs that are so ingrained in our society, that people rely upon everyday. I also have significant concerns over elected officials' disregard for the overall health and well-being of humanity. Clean air and water initiatives have been gutted in favor of more money. Medical research that helps lead to cures for chronic diseases are being cut. The accusation of wealth does not equal a better quality of life. Showing compassion for all of creation is where quality comes from. Those in elected positions seemed to have forgotten that they were elected to serve the people of their state/district but your actions show that you do not have the best interest of the people in mind. Instead you serve those who line your pockets and are afraid of losing your elected position. As a pastor and social worker, my life has been spent helping people live better lives. I will continue to fight for the people I help because that is my calling in life. As an elected official, how have you helped people?
